However, boosting production in Normal and building the Georgia facility will be expens ive. Rivian raised more than $3 billion last year via two bond issuances and currently has somewhat more than $9 billion in cash, but some analysts and investors predict it will need further financing by 2026.
"They need to have positive cash flow, yet they are currently losing money. Even if they have billions in reserves, losing $40,000 per car can quickly exhaust them, according to Sam Fiorani, vice president of global vehicle forecasting at AutoForecast Solutions.
"If R2 is as profitable as Rivian wants it to be, it could go a long way to help slow the burn of cash."
One Rivian spokesman said the Illinois facility, which makes electric delivery vans, can produce 150,000 automobiles each year. Rivian anticipates 215,000 annual car production with the R2.
Construction will restart later in Georgia since the location "remains an extremely important part of its long-term strategy," according to Rivian.
Rivian manufactured 57,232 cars last year and expects flat growth this year as it deals with falling demand and production downtime to undertake cost-cutting and margin-improving modifications.
Despite the enormous popularity of SUVs and pickup trucks in the United States, expanding manufacturing and increasing demand beyond the first wave of fans has proven difficult.
Offering inexpensive EVs at scale is seen as critical to luring consumers who are still hesitant to move from their cheaper gas-guzzling autos.
Rivian's R3 and R3X models shocked everyone on Thursday. R3 will cost less and follow R2. Rivian didn't elaborate.
Fiorani of AutoForecast said his group had expected the R3 would launch in 2028, but Thursday's announcement suggests manufacture may begin around 2027 for $40,000–$45,000. He said that the R3 and R2 share a platform, making them easy to launch together.
Rivian's restored Laguna Beach theatre, across from the Pacific Ocean, hosted the opening celebration.
The business invited Simmie Smeath, 39, and Joshua Jarvis, 33, from Salt Lake City. Both camp, ski, and mountain bike in R1 automobiles.
